Virginia Power Shift is excited to present its very first fundraising event!

Virginia Power Shift 5k Fun Run is a green race that will take place in Burke Lake Park, Sunday, August 10th at 9:00am. As a fundraiser race, we hope to raise money for this exciting upcoming environmental conference. Where does your $ go though?

The money earned at the 5k fundraiser will go directly to funding Virginia Power Shift. With the money, we can fund environmental speakers, legislators, politicians, bands and more, to make this climate summit successful.

By running in Power Shift 5k Fun Run you can be part of the fight for a clean energy future and sustainable commonwealth. On top of everything, this race will take on green initiatives in order to become an environmentally friendly race. How are we doing this? What do we mean by a green race?

For example, using biodegradable cups instead of foam cups. Other ways Virginia Power Shift 5k Fun Run will be eco-friendly include:

100% organic cotton/ non-sweat shop made race shirts
biocompostable cups/plates/utensils (made from corn and sugarcane; biodegradable in 4-6 weeks)
on site recycling with neatly labeled bins
recyclable water containers (no plastic bottles)
composting for food and waste collection
Shoe drive donation (bring your old running shoes day of race and donate them to those who have no shoes, www.soles4souls.org)
encouraging carpools and bikes day of race to reduce emissions
organic/ sustainably grown post-race food from local businesses
bike/ solar powered smoothies
on course bikes (The Bike Lane www.thebikelane.com ) to direct runners instead of motorcycles/pace cars

Not a runner? Don’t worry! You can still come out and support Power Shift 5k Fun Run. Come out and eat post-race sustainable snacks! (Food provided by Whole Foods) Try the free samples of sustainably and organically grown food! Donations welcome.

Registration for the 5k is $20 and includes a sweet, non-sweatshop made, organic cotton race shirt! Packet pickup is day of race.

Basically, it’s the Lake Braddock XC course for the first ½ mile. Runners/walkers will start next to the ice cream parlor parking lot, running down the Burke Lake Park Road, crossing over the bridge and into the trail. Instead of turning left into the campgrounds (XC course) runners/walkers will continue on the trail for another mile until they reach the turnaround point. At the turnaround point, runners/walkers will come back using the right side of the trail to avoid oncoming walkers/runners! Please be careful as the trail may be congested at times! Once runners/walkers cross the bridge on the way back, they will enter the trail (not the road back). The trail will continue for another ½ mile until you reach a sharp right turn (someone will direct you). The last 200 meters or so (last part of the LBXC course) will then loop back to where you started. A fast paced, green, grassy downhill will conclude the Virginia Power Shift 5k Fun Run! Good luck!
